[singlepic id=50 w=320 h=240 float=left]Australia is in love with companion animals (our pets). Australia has one of the highest rates of pet ownership in the world with almost 36% of households owning a dog (ACAC, 2010).
Pets are our Valentine. Pets bring so many positive benefits to our lives. There is a growing body of research that points to the positive impact pets have on our general health. Research indicates that pet owners are generally healthier and happier than non-pet owners. They have lower blood pressure and cholesterol; are less depressed; are at lower risk of heart disease; feel less lonely than non-pet owners; and actually find it easier to get to know people. RSPCA (Australia) points out that our pets are such positive influences on our lives that one study found Australian ownership of cats and dogs saved approximately $3.86 billion in health expenditure over one year.
For Valentine’s Day we set up a virtual project called: How our Pets Enrich our Lives? This involved our Pet Friendly Planning Facebook friends sending us photo’s and a few words to describe what their pets mean to them.
Here are some of the comments:
- My dogs teaches my son to love and respect
- My dog is my best friend
- My dog makes everything OK when I see her fuzzy face at the gate on arriving home from work!
- My dog provides me with unconditional love
- My dog provides me with fun and physical activity
- My dog shows me how to chill out “sniff the air”.
All photo’s were made into a Valentine’s Day card (photo above).
